Corfam Military Shoes - I watched the HBO show Westworld a few months ago. If you haven't seen the series, the series is a drama set in the American Old West. But it's not the old west, it's the future. There is a future where robots are the human form of fulfilling people working towards their dreams in some grand scheme of things. Robots are not very different from humans. They are not mostly human like the "synthetics" in alien movies. This is convenient for HBO because they can hire real actors to play the robots. In the show, you will find that people have problems. Deeper problems. So are robots. And that ends up being bad for people.
Creating a robot that looks, moves and thinks like a human is a difficult challenge. At this point, we are not even close to anyone thinking: "Beautiful woman or robot?". AI must advance. The robot needs a lot of improvement. And skin is very difficult to replicate. Human skin stretches and wrinkles in certain ways. It feels special when it hits. Who would want a hot robot selfie on Instagram if the robot has different skin? Well, some people, but not all of us.
Corfam Military Shoes
In the 1960s, DuPont attempted to address a similar problem with artificial leather when they researched and developed a porous synthetic (poromer) leather that the company named Corfam. It is intended to look, feel and resemble real leather. Better. And DuPont wanted to dominate the footwear industry. DuPont spent $100 million ($600 million in 2017 dollars) developing and marketing the product, which was launched in 1964. It was a product of the space age.

In short, Corfam has not replaced leather. Customers have always loved the real thing on their feet. And in 1971, DuPont discontinued the product and wrote off the investment. Corfam RIP. At the same time, another poromer product called "Aztran" from Goodrich was discontinued. It turns out that "The future is good in plastic", which is not true for shoes (Katharine Ross, alas). Other poromer products are still manufactured and used in military or golf shoes, but are not branded as Corfam.
I have been looking for a good condition or NOS Corfam pair in my size since 2015. I was really interested in the details and history of it. Major shoe manufacturers such as Nettleton, Nunn-Bush, Hanover, Stetson and Edwin Clapp made Corfam shoes. DuPont promotes and supports the use of the product (see announcements below). I really wanted a Nettleton pair because it was a Nettleton. I have never seen a Florsheim or Alden model used by Corfam.
I finally found a quality pair of Crosby Squares in comfortable condition and in my size. Below is a photo of the pair I bought. I think they've had it for over 40 years.
What was my first impression of Corfam shoes? More skin than nothing. The sole, heel and upper part are made of leather. And the upper part looks more like plastic than leather. Corfam has a distinctive east-west line at Wamp. The shoes also smell like plastic.

Another reason I wanted a pair was for wearability. I couldn't find any information about wearing Corfam. Some people online say that Corfam shoes are hot and uncomfortable. But I doubt it because of actual experience since DuPont stopped selling the stuff in 1971. How bad is that? DuPont has invested heavily in product design. Not everything we read is true. At least someone said so.
First, I have to prepare the pair for the dress. The old Corfa ads said it was fantastic and only needed to be washed for maintenance. I found this statement to be true. Shoes are easy to clean by simply brushing and wiping with a damp cloth. I didn't use any makeup on them.
Corfam's statements also stated that the materials prevented the strikes. But my shoes were scratched after seemingly very little use. After working on them, some of the surface scratches are removed, but the deep scratches in Corfam cannot be repaired or covered. Goose in plastic.
The shoes are well made. The quality of construction and materials are on a par with the top shoes of that era.

After washing the shoes, I wear the same pair within a week. To be honest, I didn't like the "leather" look on it, it looks like plastic to me (it is). I'm proud of my shoes (proud, I know), but wearing this pair of Crosby Squares, I try not to look down.
The shoes fit well and look good. They already broke it. I don't want to put footrests on at the end of the day. My legs didn't sweat either, and the material "breathed". When I first put the shoes on, the vamp tip dug into my foot when I bent over. It didn't hurt, but it was noticeable. Better after a few hours.
Another difference between Corfam and leather is that the Corfam upper does not stretch like leather when worn. It's hard to describe the difference, but it was noticeable when wearing it. They always seem stiff. It's like wearing plastic shoes.
When I looked at the shoes, the color on the top just didn't suit me. I liked the look of the shoes. They reminded me of the Allen Edmonds 7-End used in their MacNeil model. I asked one of the stylish ladies in my office for her opinion on the shoes (yes, I'm very shallow) and she said she liked them. He was surprised when I told him that the skin on him was made by humans.

At the end of the day, I had to make the surprising decision to install a shoe rack. Need plastic shoes? I ended up using it because most shoes are made of real leather.
Do I recommend you find and buy Corfam vintage shoes? No, waste/suck your money on other couples. I recommend watching Westworld even though it probably won't happen. My belief is that if the robots come for us, they won't be like humans. And I'm pretty sure they don't wear poromer shoes.
